The Generative Leadership Program (GLP) program addresses what is missing in the traditional understanding of management, and provides the foundation for increased performance through new paradigms and a focus on building skills through practice.
Institute for Generative Leadership The Institute for Generative Leadership was founded to provide leadership and management development and education that strengthens the impact of already successful leaders and managers, improves organizational performance, and produces a positive impact in the world. This is done by learning through recurrent practice with the actual commitments, challenges and opportunities participants face in their work and lives to produce embodied pragmatic skills and the capacity to produce more powerful leadership contexts for those they lead. The approach is hands on and focused on producing results in the world, not on academic or conceptual study.
Participants include CEO’s, executives, and managers looking to expand the capacity of their organizations and teams to make bigger and more valuable promises and meet the increasing challenges of the changing organizational world. The focus is on generating results that matter, building excellence, and creating value in the world rather than reacting to current situational breakdowns.
The Institute became the home organization in 2006 for programs that have been offered since 1998 and had been under development since 1981 and offered in previous forms. These programs are:
The Generative Leadership Program (GLP) – a 3 year program of applying generative leadership learning and practices to participant organizations and creating new value; this program include personal coaching, team learning, distance learning, and three three-day conferences a year
Managing Commitment and Value (MCV) – a 4 month program guiding the participant to see how to increase personal and organizational performance through managing commitments; the program is the first four months of the GLP program, and includes personal coaching, team and distance learning, and two three-day conferences
The Foundations of Generative Leadership Workshop – a 3 day workshop that introduces participants to the hands on foundations of effective action, coordination and teamwork, value creation, and managing customer satisfaction; participants will leave with new actions they can take in their work and lives, and with practices that will continue to grow their impact and skill, including managing commitments, capacity, and team conversations; the LoL is the opening conference for both the GLP and MCV programs as well. Participants can upgrade from Foundations for Generative Leadership to MCV or GLP.
“The MBA…is about the functions of business more than the practice of managing.” - Henry Mitzberg
The Generative Leadership Program™ is a multi-year program designed to fill the gaps in the foundations of traditional management understanding. It leverages and strengthens the competencies and skills that you already have, and gives successful executives and managers a foundation for elevating their own and their team’s performance to new levels.
This program goes beyond traditional management learning and teaching to focus on:
- New Paradigms of Action, Coordination, and Learning – we produce a new way to see the world, action, and management from a new paradigm of how action is sourced from language, concerns, and commitment; learning is based on embodied learning that produces skills in action, not just understanding.
- Practice, not just Theory – we focus on the competent execution of new action-based practices of management which strengthen your ability to see what to do and get it done in your organization.Relevance and Impact – you are guided to apply these ractices in your work to improve your and your team’s effectiveness.
- Feedback and Coaching – you receive personal coaching twice a month on your challenges and issues in leadership and management on the job.
- Replacing Old Habits with New – you learn how to go beyond what has previously been difficult for you and to produce new, more effective management habits.
- Management from Strategy to Execution – you will learn new interpretations and skills for leadership, team building, planning and projects, as well as for design and innovation – turning vision into effective action.
This new approach to learning and management practice is based on the advances of leading thinkers of this century. The approach has been developed and refined in dozens of companies and with hundreds of managers over the last eighteen years. Current participants include CEO’s, COO’s, managing directors, business founders, entrepreneurs, managers, and entire management teams.
Meeting The Challenge of the Internet Age
Successful executives and managers will require new skills to prosper in this highly dynamic environment. Those who are repeating today what they did yesterday are going to be left behind – those who are only incrementally improving what they did yesterday will not be able to take advantage of tomorrow’s opportunities.
The future opportunity for managers, executives, and business owners is to be able to anticipate, blend with, and take advantage of the unpredictable inflections of the business world. This demands of us skills for leadership, innovation, and design.
In order to develop these skills, as business leaders of tomorrow we must be able to learn, not just by absorbing new ideas, but rather by changing our habits and predispositions into new ways of seeing the world and new ways of taking action. We must develop new practices that will enable more powerful action and eventual mastery. We need to learn in action.
Yet our traditional understandings and techniques for teaching management do not reveal how to generate effective actions in a changing world and make sure that you can do it. Our current understandings of management and leadership leave gaps in addressing the hands-on skills for shifting the actions we can take, shaping how we see the world, and designing our practices of coordination and collaboration.
